The Sui blockchain is back online after a comprehensive upgrade aimed at resolving critical bugs that led to three separate outages and 15 hours of downtime over two days last week. The Sui Foundation made the announcement, emphasizing that it has implemented a ‘major upgrade’ designed to rectify the issues that crippled its network.

The disruptions began with two outages on a Thursday and Friday, caused by bugs emerging from its 1.72 software update. The first downtime spanned over eight hours, while the second outage lasted approximately 43 minutes. An immediate fix to restore services inadvertently initiated a third outage, affecting operations extensively until the recent upgrades were put into place. As of Monday, all systems are reported as fully operational.

In a blog post detailing the situation, the Sui Foundation highlighted key improvements, including enhanced failure containment and increased resilience against system failures at the end of operational epochs. The foundation also noted its plans for further investment in artificial intelligence tools that aid in diagnosing problems and monitoring network performance metrics.

“As of now, validators have fully addressed the known issues caused by both the original gas-charging bug and the randomness-state bug,” stated the foundation, reaffirming that user funds remained secure throughout the outages, with no transactions reverted post-recovery.

Network Resilience Under Scrutiny

This incident is not the first challenge the Sui blockchain has faced. It suffered a similar outage in January 2025, which halted network operations for over six hours. Another significant incident occurred in November 2024 when all validators became trapped in a crash loop for approximately 2.5 hours. As of now, Sui stands as the 13th-largest blockchain by total value locked, with $519 million currently hosted across 137 protocols, according to DefiLlama.

Challenges from Software Updates

The recent outages were rooted in specific software bugs introduced during Sui’s 1.72 update, which flawed the gas-charging mechanism, leading to the unintended charging of user balances and subsequent system crashes. The interim fix aimed to bring the network back online but carried inherent risks that ultimately led to the third outage.

Market reactions to the outages have been stark, with the SUI token price witnessing a decline from nearly $1 to around $0.88 following the issues. Prior to the outages, the token had seen a surge after a Nasdaq-listed company staked a significant portion of its supply, climbing as high as $1.41 in early May.

With its mainnet launched in May 2023, Sui aims to revolutionize the blockchain landscape by offering scalable solutions adept at handling transactions suitable for mainstream financial institutions.

Future Outlook

Looking forward, the Sui Foundation expresses optimism regarding enhancements that could further strengthen the network against future disruptions. This will involve not just software fixes but also a dedicated approach to managing potential vulnerabilities in real-time operations, thereby ensuring a more resilient blockchain ecosystem.

As stakeholders await the next steps, the cryptocurrency landscape remains vigilant, tracking Sui's progress and the broader implications for blockchain longevity and reliability.
