A storm is brewing in the world of cryptocurrency security. The rise of advanced artificial intelligence models has led to what Immunefi CEO Mitchell Amador describes as a ‘vulnerability apocalypse,’ emboldening attackers and reigniting the threat of decentralized finance (DeFi) hacks.

Speaking at the recent WAIB Summit in Monaco, Amador outlined the daunting landscape that has emerged in 2026. The latest iterations of AI technology, including Claude Opus 4.8 and ChatGPT 5.5, have not only revolutionized sectors like security but have also been weaponized by malicious actors, resulting in a dramatic surge of over $634 million in losses attributed to crypto hacks in April alone. This figure marks the highest monthly total since the devastating Bybit breach, which saw losses soar to approximately $1.4 billion in February 2025, according to data from DefiLlama.

The Next Three to Four Years: A Crucial Survival Phase

Amador predicts that the next three to four years will be a pivotal survival phase for the crypto industry. During this period, however, he expresses hope that cybersecurity teams can leverage the very AI models contributing to current vulnerabilities to develop robust, “impregnable” codebases. This transition is crucial if the industry hopes to outpace the evolving techniques employed by cybercriminals.

He further suggested that adopting more “crowdsourced security solutions” could reduce this timeline to under two years, offering a vital lifeline if implemented effectively. With the constant evolution of threat vectors, the Industry must adapt swiftly or face dire repercussions.

AI's Role in Amplifying Cyber Threats

Amador’s insightful commentary comes on the heels of Anthropic's launch of their latest AI model, Fable 5, which has raised significant concerns about its potential to amplify cryptocurrency exploits. This apprehension has been exacerbated by the revelation that while Fable 5 incorporates safeguards to redirect discussions about cybersecurity to less potent models, such protective measures may ultimately be insufficient against seasoned attackers.

The industry’s recent security woes underscore an acute awareness of the vulnerabilities that persist within many DeFi protocols. A significant incident occurred on April 19, when an assailant siphoned approximately 116,500 restaked Ether (rsETH) – translating to nearly $293 million – from Kelp DAO’s LayerZero-powered rsETH bridge. LayerZero disclosed that Kelp DAO's configuration created a singular point of failure, emphasizing that they had previously cautioned against such vulnerabilities.
